To Get Married the Groom Must Fetch the Bride – Part 2

Fetching the bride is a fun activity and it makes sure that the groom is sure he wants to marry the bride.

Once the groom is at the bride’s house he is greeted by the youngest male in the bride’s family who must open the door for the groom. The groom must wait patiently because sometimes the youngest brother is very small and must have help to open the door. If she has no younger brother a younger male friend or cousin can do the job.

The youngest brother will have two oranges that he will give the groom once he opens the door. These are for good fortune and will be left in the bridal car to make sure it is free of accidents on the wedding day.

The groom will give the brother a packet of money for opening the door. Now the groom must face the bridesmaids who have a series of obstacles that he must get through in order to get to the bride.

One of the obstacles he will have to face in order to fetch the bride will be that he must get through the blocked door. The bridesmaids will have a series of questions that the must answer in order to get past each obstacle.

The reason they are blocking the door is to show that they love the bride and they do not want to give her away. This is part of the humor/humour of the situation but it is taken very seriously.

Again the groom must have red packets with money and it should be in a certain amount that is usually decided ahead of time. The bridesmaids now will start the quest. The bridesmaids will have him do several things like:

  • Answer quizzes about the courtship and these things may be very unique questions and he must hope he ahs the answers to them.
  • He might have to propose to the bride again in front of everyone.
They may make him do something physical like pushups or running up and down stairs if there are stairs.
  • He might be required to sing one or more love songs to his bride to show his live.
  • He might have to know a series of Chinese proverbs that have to do with praising the bride.

Depending on how much fun the bridesmaids can think up will determine how many obstacles he has to go through. Each one he finishes will advance him closer to the bride.

To help the groom to find out some of the more obscure answers to questions, one of his troop of brothers will get close to one of the sisters and she will tell him what hey have planned so the groom can prepare some things ahead of time.

What will happen if the brothers fail the tests? Will he be able to move forward? What happens if an elder family member objects to this kind of fun? Will the bride and groom be dishonored? Find out in the next article.

  1. This is a very interesting and very elaborate tradition for the chinese culture. I read the part 1 of this post and I must say the groom will really have a hard time. What if the youngest brother who will open the car is a baby? I gues an adult will assist the baby to do that task.

    Hi Wedding Enthusiast,
I can see that you are really interested in wedding traditions.

I would think it would be a really cute idea for a baby to do the tasks…provided we can get the baby to walk straight! :) Nah, we get young children, usually below age of 5, whom, after training, can walk in a straight and handle tasks like opening the car door and throwing the flowers down the aisle.

hope that answers your question. by the way, great blog you have!
