Educating Your Invited Western Guests
When You Invite Someone from the West They Need to Be Educated
Although Singaporean or Chinese weddings are usually attended by friends and family there may be a time when you will want to invite western friends.
They will need to be told what to do in order to make sure they do not embarrass or dishonor the ceremony. Because they are used to their own wedding styles this will be quite different from their own.
It is necessary to prepare the westerner so they do not embarrass the bride or groom. The Singapore Chinese wedding is very different from what they are used to and they will think it is the same type of wedding.
Things that a westerner needs to know at the bare minimum are:
- The custom of the wedding and what they need to do
- The protocol and how they should enter the hall
- What they should bring to the wedding
- How they should dress for the wedding
Many westerners will think that they are to dress up for the occasion because that is what happens in western weddings. It should be explained to them that the Singaporean or Chinese wedding is all about the bride and groom.
People do not dress up because it would overshadow the bride and groom. It is a good idea for the guests at the wedding to dress in their jeans or in a casual way so that it doesn’t take away from the way the bride and groom are dressed. They would embarrass the groom if they wore a suit that was more expensive than the one the groom wore.
The groom also needs to know that it is traditional for the guests to pay for the rental of the hall and the expense of the reception. This is done through understanding the market for weddings. They must know how much everything costs so they can give the right amount to the wedding party to pay for things.
Each guest will fill a red packet with about 10% of the cost of the table. This red packet is called the Ang Pau and the packet will be handed to the groom and the guest will put their own name on it. This will insure that the groom still acknowledges the guest.
If the westerner doesn’t know the cost of the table it is a good idea to tell them. Tell the westerner that they must bring the amount that is expected or a little more; they can never bring less. Explain that the purpose of the money is to not embarrass the groom.
When they walk into the hall, guests must register and then they will be given their table. Once there, they should look through the wedding pictures. This will be different for them because usually the pictures are taken at the wedding in a western wedding.
